What is Octa?

Teijin Octa is built from a hollow-core fiber with eight fins radiating outward, connected by a mesh backing — giving the fabric a smooth mesh exterior and a brushed fleece interior. The spaces between those projections hold body heat, while the hollow core keeps the fiber itself exceptionally light — Teijin puts it at roughly half the weight of standard polyester. That warmth-to-weight ratio rivals Alpha, with noticeably better resistance to snags and tears.

  • Ultralight

Roughly half the weight of standard polyester — light enough to disappear in a pack.

  • Breathable

Moves heat and moisture out fast — a true active layer for hard efforts in the cold.

  • Durable

Handles snags and tears better than Alpha Direct, so it holds up in a pack.

  • Quick-Drying

Hollow-core fibers shed moisture quickly and dry with airy speed.

Know before you buy

Octa breathes so freely that it offers almost no wind resistance on its own, and the fabric is semi-transparent. Neither is a flaw — they're the trade-off that makes it this light and this breathable. Layer it under a wind or rain shell when conditions call for one.

It's also not the right pick for extreme cold at low activity levels. Without enough body heat moving through the fabric to fill its air pockets, it won't insulate as well as a thicker traditional fleece. Octa does its best work when you're moving.
